The materials used in a rainwater collection system are fairly simple, because the system itself is efficient and easy to install. You can choose two different basic setups, and the one you choose determines the kinds of materials you will need.

Using Gravity and the Laws of Nature

A gravity flow rainwater collection system is one where you just let nature take its course. When it rains, gravity forces the water into the collection tank where it can then be pumped either to the yard and gardens or to the inside of the house.

A gravity system does not require a sump pump to get the water into the water tank. The basic materials required for the gravity system include the following.

* Gutter system for collection of rainwater
* Leaf trap which collections and diverts gutter debris
* PVC pipe which directs water into tank and for water flow outside tank
* First flush diverter to reject the first amount of rain collected
* Filter to remove rainwater debris
* Sand or more permanent base for tank
* Rain water tank
* Pump for pulling water out of tank
* Filtration system if pumping into house

When you are going to pump your water into the house, you will need to install a filtration system which is capable of filtering out smaller particles such as sediment, roof algae and heavy metals. House water can be used for flushing toilets and doing the laundry, and though you will not be drinking the water, you want the water as clean as possible to protect your clothes, appliances and plumbing system.

When Nature Needs an Assist

Sometimes nature needs an assist and gravity alone is not enough for filling the water tank with rainwater. This can be due to the lay of the land or because of where you want to locate the rainwater tank. In those cases you will need to add a sump pump tank between the first filter or first flush diverter and the rain water tank. The rainwater will flow from the gutter into the PVC pipe and through the first filter into the sump pump tank. The filtering system in this case will have to be able to remove sediment or any other contaminants which can damage the sump pump.

Of course the pump itself has a filter also. The sump pump then pumps waters through more PVC pipe into the rainwater tank. At that point, the water is ready to be distributed. Once again, if you are going to use the water inside the house you will need to add a filtration system which removes things like parasites, bird droppings, yeast, and any roof toxins that have made it to that point.

You can install your own system, but it is recommended you get professional assistance. A technician can provide valuable advice concerning the size of the pumps needed and the kinds of filtration systems that will work best on your particular setup. The materials used in the rainwater collection system are not complicated, but there are still some decisions that must be made which will impact the efficiency of the system.

Water conservation is an important topic for all of us.  Even if you don’t live in an area subject to freshwater shortages, billions of other people around the world do.  Freshwater is one of our most precious and also our most wasted resources.  Approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water.  Can you imagine if you came home at the end of the day and had no water to prepare dinner, take a shower, brush your teeth, or prepare a bottle for the baby?  This is what much of the developing world deals with on a daily basis.  And the problem grows worse as the world’s population increases.

So how do the rest of us help?  The best way to make a difference is stop taking water for granted and start conserving the freshwater that we use every day.  It’s easier than you might think, and just a few little steps multiply as time goes by, adding up to thousands of gallons saved each year.  Here are some ideas to get you and your family started conserving water.

1. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and washing your face at the sink.  Water saved: 3 gallons per day.

2. Turn off the water in the shower when you’re lathering up or shampooing your hair.  Water saved: 5 gallons per minute.

3. Install a water-saving showerhead.  Water saved: 1 to 2 gallons per minute.

4. Don’t rinse your dishes before loading the dishwasher.  Believe it or not, most dishwashers are designed to handle un-rinsed dishes, and in fact, they may perform better if dishes are not pre-rinsed.  Water saved: 20 gallons per dishwasher load.

5. If you have a dishwasher, use it.  Studies have shown that new, efficient dishwashers use far less water than washing dishes by hand, so when in doubt, put that pan in the dishwasher!  Not only will this save you water, it will save you time, too.

6. Routinely check toilets for leaks.  Standard, water flush toilets are very leaky, that’s all there is to it.  Most toilets will need their inner parts replaced at least once every year or two to prevent unnecessary leaks.  Water saved: Up to 200 gallons per day.

7. If you have old toilets, consider replacing them with new, high efficiency toilets that use less water per flush.  Or, better yet, consider installing a composting toilet that uses no water.  Water saved: 5 to 7 gallons per flush.

8. If you water your lawn, be sure to put your sprinklers on timers.  A sprinkler that’s accidentally left on all night can waste over a thousand gallons of water.

9. If you don’t have aerators on your kitchen and bathroom sink faucets, get some.  They are incredibly cheap, you probably won’t notice a difference in the amount of water flowing from your faucet, and they’ll save 1 to 2 gallons of water per minute.

10. Use a rain barrel at the bottom of your gutter downspouts to collect rainwater for watering plants and filling birdbaths.  Rain barrels can be purchased online or through specialty stores, or it may be possible to build one yourself.

Remember, water usage habits are learned at home.  If you teach your children how to conserve water while they are growing up, they will carry those habits with them for a lifetime.  Think what a difference we could make in 20 or 30 years if an entire generation were raised with water conservation in mind.  So start today, and start at home.  Water conservation is important for everyone, regardless of who you are or where you live.  Freshwater is our most precious natural resource, and we want to be sure there is enough of it to go around.

Water saving tip # 3 – Be water smart – To be clever about your water use, water your garden in the evening. Water stored in the soil is evaporated throughout the day so to watering in the evening minimises evaporation and allows the water to penetrate the soil and feed your plants.

Water saving tip # 4 – Water Tank – A water tank can be installed for just around $1000 and can collect thousands of litres of water from your roof. Look into government rebates to help bring the cost of installing a water tank down.

Water saving tip # 5 – Fill ‘er up – Do laundry only when you have a full load. The same goes for dishes if you’re using a dishwasher.

Water saving tip # 6 – Power Shower – The best showers are short and sweet. With a AAA rated showerhead and a four minute limit, you can bring your shower water use down to just 36 litres.

Water saving tip # 7 – Clean Dishes – Doing dishes by hand greatly reduces your water use, so save the dish washer for bigger jobs. Alternatively, invest in a newer water efficient dishwasher which uses about the same amount of water washing dishes by hand.

Water saving tip # 8 – Pool Talk – Cover your pool to minimise evaporation and keep its temperature warm enough for a quick winter dip.

Water saving tip # 9- Cut out leaks – A leaking faucet adds up. One drop per second can add up to over 1500 litres of water a year. A steady stream will do away with over 300,000 litres a year. Inspect your taps and cut out those leaks.

Water saving tip # 10 – On the loo – Check to see if your toilet cistern is leaking and invest in a water saving loo. Otherwise, put a brick or a filled water bottle in the cistern to minimise water use.

Being a gardener and based in Colorado, it has been stressful for me because this state has been experiencing a severe drought for years. Because of water scarce, the local government imposed prohibition to limit water consumption for plants and lawn. However, because I am implementing some effective strategies, My house is the only one that is in green in our neighborhood. So, for those who have lived in areas similar to us, do not be worry because it is just a matter of finding effective strategy to grow plants having poor water supply as its constraint.

First, if the soil you have does not retain water very well, you can make a water conservation by adding with lots of compost. That process does not only prevent water from escaping but can make your plants to grow healthy and to survive.
Not all plants really require that much of water so one best effective way to save water is to segregate them according to their water needs. So place in one area the ones that do not need much water and in the other area, those that need more water. By segregating them, you can focus watering to plants that need it.
Drip irrigation system installation is also important to put in your garden because this allows every single drop to be absorbed by plans, no single drop is wasted. More often,roots are overwhelmed with the mere amount of water in the soil and drip irrigation system manages that.
And if you still need to have more water for your garden and you do not have enough, you may consider of replacing some plants with the ones that need less water. If you need shrub that need less water, you may plant heavenly bamboo. It’s not only tolerant in drought but also, a offer unique decorative design for your garden. For herbs, you may use rosemary, this is rarely thirsty.
