Everyone knows the world is almost 80 percent water. Everyone also knows that your body is mostly made out of water as well. Our lives depend on water. We will die from lack of water before we die of hunger. Conserving water should be everyone’s job. If everyone in the world saved water, we could save thousands of gallons of water a year for each person. Despite having so much water around us, there is very little fresh water around and of the fresh water that is available, only about one third of that is available for human consumption.
Most of the world’s water is salt water from the oceans. We cannot use it for human consumption. Of the small amount of water that is available for human consumption, only a fraction is actually used by us as drinking water. Most of it is used to grow crops, produce electricity, run factories and for sanitation. While the human population increases in the world, water supplies are drying up. Water consumption rose dramatically in the last century with many countries reaching their limit. In 2003, the United Nations declared it to be “The International Year of Freshwater” because of the problem we have with water consumption.
The lack of conserving water on a global level will have severe affects on the economy and the environment. We use water for so many different reasons. It is used to keep our lawns green and it is used for mining and industrial purposes. Conserving water is about being able to manage the current resources we have and eliminate any wasted use of those resources. We need to maximize the efficient use of water instead of taking for granted the fact that it is around us.
Conserving water can be beneficial not only to the environment but to your pocketbook as well. You cannot only save water and help save the environment, you can also save yourself some money by lowering your water bills. Buying water and energy efficient appliances, installing low flow water fixtures and planting native landscaping around your house, you can potentially save hundreds of dollars on your utility bills every year. A tankless water heater can reduce energy consumption by 20 to 30% over a regular storage water heater. By having a tankless water heater, you eliminate the need to constantly have the tank full and heated. A few simple steps taken by everyone can dramatically decrease the water consumption. It should be everyone’s job to conserve water otherwise we might find soon that we do not have as much of it as we thought.
